Meet the Maker Behind Curse of Horror Shop

1. Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your business?

I was born and raised in Santa Ana, CA, in the early ‘90s. Growing up in a Hispanic household, we didn’t have much, but my family was always close-knit, so material things never mattered. Halloween was my favorite holiday because it wasn’t about money—it was about fun and creativity. My mother made my costumes every year, and I spent five Halloweens as either a witch or a vampire—which, to me, were the coolest costumes ever! That’s where my love for all things spooky began.

Fast forward to 2018, when I started my crafting journey. I knew I wanted to create something that reflected my childhood and love for the macabre. When I designed my first creepy cup, it felt like home. That’s when Curse of Horror Shop was officially born.

2. When did you start your business?

I started making creepy drinkware in 2018 as a creative escape. By 2022, I took the leap and officially launched Curse of Horror Shop.

3. What was the moment you decided to turn your passion into a business?

As a stay-at-home mom, being present for my son was my priority. I searched for a career that allowed me to stay home while doing something fulfilling. I started crafting as a form of self-care, and soon realized that my passion was right in front of me all along.

4. Do you have a favorite gothic aesthetic or subculture that inspires your designs?

I’m definitely drawn to Vampire Goth, but I also take inspiration from the Romantic Goth aesthetic. There’s something so alluring about dark elegance.

5. As a small business owner, what are some of the challenges you’ve faced, and how have you overcome them?

One of my biggest struggles has been balancing work and personal life. Learning to plan and schedule my work hours has helped me stay organized while making time for my family and self-care.

6. Do you have any advice for new small business owners?

Absolutely! No matter how far your goals may seem, always remember why you started. Celebrate every win—big or small—because every step forward is an accomplishment worth recognizing.

7. Do you have a ritual or mindset that helps you get into the spooky spirit when designing?

Setting the perfect spooky atmosphere is key! I dim the lights, light my favorite scented candles, and put on a spooky lo-fi playlist. That always gets me in the creative zone.

8. Is there a dream product or collaboration you’d love to see happen in the future?

Accessories always add the finishing touch to any outfit, so making custom handbags is one thing I strive for in the future.

9. Maybe something that would take your business to the next level?

I've always dreamt of creating my own style of corporate goth handbags.

10. For fans of your business and newcomers alike—what can they expect to see from you in the future?

We have a few goodies brewing, but we are looking to expand our variety of drinkware for all coffee lovers and cold brew Battys.

11. Do you have any upcoming collections or special releases they should look out for?

Summer is just around the corner, so look out for our Summerween collection coming soon!

12. For people just discovering your mugs and tumblers, what makes your products different from others in the spooky and goth world?

Other than our goth staple items, we like to keep it spooky year-round, no matter the season or holiday. All ghouls need a home.

13. What’s the one thing you’d want them to know about your brand?

The main thing I would want everyone to know is we take pride in handcrafting every order and hand-packaging everything ourselves.
