Next up: Our interview with Lee Jennings of The Funeral Portrait.

1. Where did the name The Funeral Portrait come from?

"Well we wanted something a little different for a name but also something that fit the music we were making. We had about two other names picked out and the deciding factor was the way the initials worked as TFP!"

2. How did the Curst collaboration manifest? Did you always envision this kind of partnership?

"Ive dreamed of doing a makeup line and nail polish since the beginning of when this band started. I honestly had no clue where to start or what to do, but when so many people started tagging us in the Curst tweet saying we needed to collab together, I went down a deep dive and we started chatting about different ideas."

3. What is a detail within The Funeral Portrait x Curst collaboration that was important to you to incorporate?

"The main thing I wanted was something for everyone. We didn’t want to just do 'makeup,' so having nail polish was extremely important, but also a bag small, enough to take with you to an upcoming show or some chapstick on hand at any moment. This band speaks to so many different people so I wanted this line to represent that."

4. Do you remember your first experience with makeup? If yes, what was it?

"Ahhh probably when I was 14 first discovering 'emo' music. I definitely know I begged my mom to put it on me a few times before going to a few shows back in the day. But makeup has always been kinda a weird thing for me. I got picked on so much in school that i moved myself as far away from anything that would make people make fun of me more and more. I’ve always loved being around it and was always so jealous of everyone who would wear it. Now, it’s fully part of our show and it’s been wild to see so many people showing up with makeup like mine at shows."

5. Where/who/what do you draw inspiration from in your creative endeavors? Music or otherwise.

"Anything from the mid 2000’s emo world. It’s what made me and I love to bring it full circle for a newer generation."

6. Pencil/gel or liquid eyeliner?

"So I don’t use eyeliner often, but I believe we use a liquid eyeliner most of the time on me."

7. Lipstick or a liquid lip?

"We’ve been using liquid to make some blood on my face for a few shows and that’s been wild to see."

8. What beverages and snacks are your pre/post show must-haves?

"I am a snack god so this is how it normally goes… I wake up, drink a Ghost energy drink. Then, I’ll eat a Quest bar and some Quest chips at some point in the day (I do a super low carb diet). It’s all about the Coke Zero. I’ll have a few on hand to keep me going through the day haha"

9. Who is an underrated artist or band you think deserves more love? In the scene or otherwise.

"I think CREEPER should be the biggest band in the world. They put so much into their art and I love everything that band touches. Something special about them."

10. What can fans expect to see next from The Funeral Portrait?

"Ah we have a record coming out on September Friday The 13th. And we are so excited for everyone to hear it. We’ve been working on it non stop since 2019 so it’s wild that it’s finally here!"

11. Which song are you looking forward to playing live MOST off the upcoming record, Greetings From Suffocate City?

"I really think people will connect with the last two songs on the record, Stay Weird and Hearse For Two. They are extremely special songs to me and I’m so excited to see what people think when they hear them. Stay Weird, is a love letter to younger me to just remind myself to be who I am and stay true always. And then, Hearse For Two, is a song about my grandmother passing away in 2019 and how things haven’t been the same since."

12. A fun fact about the band

"We love Malls! We will go out of our way as many days as possible to walk around malls and go shopping."

13. Anything else you’d like to share!

"We are currently on the road and would love for everyone to come hang out! Also, please order this makeup collection so we can do another one next year!" Current tour dates here.
