Welcome to our first This or That: Beauty Sponge vs. Makeup Brush edition, where we're going to give you the details on these two application tools. We want to hear from you in the comments which direction you typically go (or just overall prefer)! This will act as a guide and (hopefully) teach you an application tip or two along the way.
It's no secret that certain products make more sense with one or the other, but there's also no true RIGHT way. Things work well for one ghoul might not be the best for another, and vice versa.
The 'Beauty Blender' title took over the generalized makeup sponge category when the iconic Beautyblender® went on the market sometime around 2002-2003. There are countless options now, years later from many brands in the cosmetics field. This application tool (+ technique) changed the makeup game and is known for its smooth and poreless finish with cream and liquid product. The angles and sizing of this tool make it precise and thorough in it's coverage.

Tip: According to Beauty Bay, it is recommended to wash your beauty sponges after every use to avoid bacteria build up and growth, if possible. If not, prioritize washing once a week.
Makeup brushes on the other hand have been around and used for similar application for centuries. The fibers may be natural or synthetic and have different uses accordingly. Either are great for cream or liquid product (keeping this comparison in the same realm). Makeup brushes are well known and AMAZING for their powder application as well, but we will save that dialogue for another time. The best brushes for cream or liquid are semi-firm and flat, or a brush specific to buffing. The fullness of the bristles helps to apply product evenly.
Tip: According to the American Academy of Dermatology, it is recommended to wash your makeup brushes every 7-10 days.
A brief desciption of both and hopefully some more insight into application, history, and cleanliness. We'd love to hear about your thoughts on Beauty Sponges vs. Makeup Brushes and your own personal choices, uses, and techniques. Let us know in the comments!
As always, thank you for being here. Don't forget to tag us in your creations!

Being an elder millennial (yikes), I went from using my fingers (double yikes) into using sponges when the BB was launched. I’ve tried using different styles of brushes, but I find sponges to be flawless and easiest to build coverage.
I love using Sponges more then brush foundation. I just love how it looks after the application with no streaks from a brush and takes the excess from foundation. Love these blogs! they are so fun!
